02 / MATERIAL INTELLIGENCE

One versatile alloy.
Performance shaped by treatment.

AISI 4140 is a medium-carbon, chromium-molybdenum low-alloy steel. Appropriate heat treatment develops a useful balance of strength and toughness for mechanically demanding components.

Its hardenability makes it suitable for quenching and tempering. Depending on condition, design and service environment, it offers fatigue resistance, wear resistance, impact resistance and torsional strength.

As an AISI 4140 round bar supplier in India, Prayas Metal connects the material specification with the mechanical properties your application requires.

Common grade cross references

These are commonly cross-referenced designations, not automatic substitutes. Chemistry limits, standards and delivery conditions can differ. The governing specification, mechanical properties and testing requirements take precedence for every order.

03 / MECHANICAL PROPERTIES

Define the target.
Verify the result.

There is no single universal yield strength, tensile strength or hardness for 4140 steel. Our commercial advantage is coordinating supply and heat treatment toward an agreed set of mechanical properties.

Hardness and strength are related, but a hardness reading alone does not establish compliance with a specified yield strength. Where required, tensile testing verifies the agreed yield and tensile criteria.

Yield strength

State the minimum or agreed range in MPa or ksi, together with the required test method and specimen location.

Tensile strength

Define the required strength range and any related elongation or impact requirements for technical review.

Hardness

Specify HRC or HB, the permitted range and testing locations. Confirm whether surface or core properties are critical.

Quench for hardness. Temper for balance.

After austenitizing, quenching cools the steel rapidly to develop a hardened structure. Tempering then adjusts the balance of hardness, yield strength, tensile strength and toughness. The selected cycle must suit the section and the required properties.

Why section size matters

A larger bar cools differently at its centre and surface. Through-section response can therefore differ from that of a smaller diameter, and test location matters when confirming compliance.

Have a project-specific question? ↗
What is AISI 4140 alloy steel?

AISI 4140 is a medium-carbon chromium-molybdenum low-alloy steel used for mechanically loaded components. Suitable heat treatment develops a balance of strength, toughness and wear resistance.

What is 4140 hardened and tempered steel?

It is 4140 that has been hardened by heating and quenching, then tempered to achieve a selected balance of strength, hardness and toughness. It is also called quenched and tempered steel, or QT.

Is AISI 4140 the same as 42CrMo4?

They are commonly cross-referenced grades, but are not automatically identical. Confirm the governing standard, chemistry, delivery condition, mechanical properties and test requirements before substitution. Werkstoff 1.7225 is commonly associated with 42CrMo4.

Is 4140 the same as EN19?

EN19 is a common commercial cross reference for 4140-type chromium-molybdenum steel. The exact specification and delivery condition must be reviewed; the grade names alone do not establish interchangeability.

Can AISI 4140 hardness be customized?

A target hardness range can be proposed for technical review. The feasible result depends on section size, starting material and heat treatment. Specify the range, HRC or HB scale, and required test locations.

Can AISI 4140 yield strength be customized?

We coordinate supply and heat treatment toward customer-agreed yield strength requirements, subject to technical feasibility. State the minimum or range in MPa or ksi, test location and associated hardness, tensile and impact requirements. Not every combination is achievable.

How does bar diameter affect 4140 mechanical properties?

Larger sections cool more slowly at the centre during quenching. This can affect the depth of hardening and the properties measured at the core compared with the surface. Diameter, sampling location and the treatment route must therefore be considered together.

What hardness can 4140 achieve?

There is no single hardness value for all 4140. Annealed, quenched, tempered and surface-hardened conditions have different results. Send the required HRC or HB range and section size; we will review feasibility rather than promise an unrestricted range.

Do you provide UT testing?

Ultrasonic testing can be coordinated where specified in the order. Include the applicable procedure or standard, acceptance criteria, coverage and reporting requirements in your RFQ.

Do you provide PMI?

PMI can be coordinated where specified. The method must suit the elements to be verified; conventional handheld XRF does not establish carbon content. Specify any additional chemical verification required.

Do you provide MTC?

Mill / Manufacturer Test Certificates can be included in the agreed supply documentation. Heat-treatment or subsequent test reports should also be specified where needed to demonstrate the final delivery condition and correlated heat identity.

Do you export AISI 4140 round bars?

Yes. Prayas Metal India Pvt Ltd welcomes international enquiries for AISI 4140 alloy steel round bars from India. Share the destination, quantities, specification and documentation requirements for an export quotation.

What details should I send when requesting a quotation?

Include grade and governing standard, diameter or section, length, quantity, delivery condition, target yield strength, tensile strength and hardness with units, testing and inspection requirements, delivery destination and schedule. Include impact criteria and specimen locations where applicable.

Can hardened and tempered 4140 be welded?

Welding requires an appropriate qualified procedure for the grade, section and delivery condition. It can alter the heat-affected zone and final mechanical properties. Preheat, consumables, hydrogen control and any post-weld treatment must be established by a qualified welding specialist, with re-verification where required.
